RevMan

Please note:
We are currently rebuilding RevMan as ‘RevMan Web’. It is still important that you share your ideas, but please know that they will not be implemented in the near future.
Approved ideas that we can include in the first generation of RevMan Web will be tagged as ‘Planned’. Ideas that we cannot implement until the second generation will be tagged as ‘Planned – long term’.

Tell us what you need.
Start with a short label and then a fuller description. See if you can include a ‘user story’ as the first line of the description. A user story is about clearly telling is who you are, what you want and why you need it.
Example: “As an author, I want to edit my review on my tablet so I can finish it faster.”

How can we improve review editing?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. RevMan: introduce capacity for list of frequently used symbols, e.g. µ, β, ≤, ≥

RevMan has a truly magnificent range of symbols available for use, but each user only deploys around 6-12 of the total. It would be much easier and quicker to locate these if RevMan could compile a brief list of the user's 'favourites', e.g. µ, β, ≤, ≥, from which the frequently used symbols could be selected directly rather than having to search for them every time they are needed.

    • As an editor I would like the Risk of Bias figure to automatically add up the numbers of studies at high, low and unclear risk.

As an editor I would like the Risk of Bias figure to automatically add up the numbers of studies at high, low and unclear risk. This would save a lot of time when checking if what the authors have said in the text matches with the judgements they have made for each study in the risk of bias table attached to the Characteristics of Included studies table

      • Automatic Correction of References with DOI, PMID, Trial ID

As a reviewer/TSC, I want to be able to see a button just in front of the references that have a PMID, or DOI, or Trial ID that by pressing that button, Review Manager could automatically get all correct citation information from PubMed or DOI server or Trial Registers and import into Review Manager and replace with current incorrect/insufficient info.

        • Android/iPhone/iPad/tablet RevMan

To create a tablet/smartphone app for RevMan would make my life a whole lot easier. I'm sure many authors would agree.

It is a pain having to drag the laptop everywhere just to work on a review so an app/web-based application would be much appreciated.

RevMan Web will be a responsive Web app, which will work fine on tablets, and be functional on a phone.
We do not have plans/resources to code native Android/iOS apps.

          • Add and isbn identifier for book references

As an Information Specialist I would like to be able to add an ISBN to a book reference in a review. The current list of identifiers includes 'other', but a specific ISBN label would help with discoverability of the resource being referenced. See attached image of a book reference.

            • Facility to designate the main comparison 'Summary of findings' table manually or not have a main comparison

When a review includes lots of interventions you don't always want one of them to be more prominent and appear at the head of the review. The only remedy at present is to move all the SoF into the 'additional tables' section, but this means that a 'Summary of findings 2 aspirin for headache' link (for example) becomes 'Table 2', which is less informative.

Agreed by RAC/IKMD. Case number 67177.
Comments: MECIR: Conduct 72; Reporting 85 (Multiple subgroup analyses and sensitivity analyses).
TRAINING: Could be useful for responding to queries during editing, long-term recording of the analyses conducted, as well as updates. Could also be used as a place to store forest plots with only one study, which we don’t currently recommend are published.
Karin D: This could also have the added bonus of reducing the number of figures if the sensitivity analyses are stored elsewhere

                • Forest plots footnotes

Allow more than 80 characters to be displayed from the footnotes when printing the forest plots of the review.
Currently the footnotes are cut after about 80 characters (RevMan 5.3.5) and the rest of the text is lost.

Add a prediction interval to the forest plot for random-effects meta-analyses (possibly with a caveat that they should only be used when there are greater than a certain number of studies). Most important for correct interpretation. Designated as high priority by SMG. See case 100621.

                        • Custom table of study attributes

As an author I want to see a single table of key attributes of my studies, so I can easily compare them.

In RevMan 5, study characteristics are listed one after the other. The proposal here is to create a study matrix - a custom table of study attributes where the author chooses what to display in each column.

Authors should be able to choose from:
                          - Indivicual Characteristics (eg Methods)
                          - Each RoB domain judgement and reason
                          - IDs (eg clinicaltrials.gov)
                          - all Outcomes/Subgroups study is included in
                          - etc

A given matrix view could possible also be saved…

When there are more reports for the same study, we can select one as the primary reference. But if you want to link to one of the other reports (e.g. in the Characteristics of included studies), this seems impossible (unlike you make a duplicate entry for this reference under Additional References)

                            • Include optional subheading for Summary of Findings tables under Data collection & methods

It is not always clear where details regarding the methodological approach to Summary of Findings tables should go - especially in protocols. Having a subheading would standardise the way that authors include information about which outcomes they intend to use as the basis for the SOF table, and what sort of framework they intend to use for this approach such as GRADE.

I don’t mind, though, if there’s a special new section or just agreement on where it should go in one of the existing sections.

Bernd: RevMan is our interface to the authors and should be as good as possible. Currently authors do not have adequate control of how their review will look like (prepub pdf helps somewhat but breaks down with larger reviews). The current table functionality drives authors crazy and the result is a very unprofessional look of tables in the Cochrane Library pdf-version even after CRG copy editing because we don’t have control as well.

                                • Highlight newly added studies/refs in an updated review

Highlight or otherwise distinguish newly added studies (and new refs to already included studies) when updating a review - helpful for updating authors but also good to flag up these new studies/refs in the published review. Should be automatically switched off when review starts next update cycle.

As an author and an editor I would like to distinguish who made the revisions tracked in the current version of the review at a glance. This would help any contributor check revisions just added by a co-author or colleague, without having to go through the whole document using the accept or reject changes function (which is laborious) or cross-checking with a pdf comparison document. I would like as a Managing Editor, to know that authors could easily identify and approve any recent changes I have made in a version of the review that already has tracked changes. At the…

                                      Quick value score 2

Pros: +2 High value; +1 Obvious link to target (1.3 Efficient production)
                                      Cons: -1 Hard to do

RevMan Web will definitely always use the name of the person, without relying the user inputting it.

It is still uncertain whether we will be able to fully deliver an ‘at a glance’ view of who edited what in the 1st generation of RevMan web.

                                    • Enter button for using the Find function in RevMan

Once the text to be searched for is inserted in the ‘Find’ box,
hitting ‘Enter’ does not start the search. The operator’s hand has to
move to the mouse to press the ‘Find’ button, which is not helpful for
                                      touch-typists.

                                      • Validation report to check date of search when author submits review for editorial approval

A review should be published with a search date of 12 months or less. The editorial process can take some time, therefore, when a review team submit a review into the editorial process, the validation report should highlight if the search is more than 6 months old and prompt the review author to request a search update
